When I went for my walk on Sunday, I knew Spring was finally here–I wore only one of my usual three warm, woolen items. The hat and gloves were back at home in the hall closet.
All I required was my light scarf, (and down vest) both of which were also discarded–hand-carried on the last leg of my 30 minute constitutional.
I was greeted by two amusing sights along the way–two ducks who’d taken to an impromptu ‘pond’ behind one of the homes in our neighborhood. Seems there’s an underwater spring in the open swath of water company pathway that I was walking.
We’ve had SO MUCH rain…even for Seattle, that the water table bubbled up right through the ground–the two waterfowl were bobbing and paddling about in a mere 6 inches of water.
What other clues were there testifying a new season was upon us? The bird song chirruping through the trees, echoes bouncing from side to side of the grassy way–a shrill ‘tseee, tseee, tseee’ calling joyfully, then the ‘chick a dee dee dee’ of the chickadee as it swooped overhead.
Bullfrogs (oh, the joy!) bur-burped bur-burped in the bog behind the fence.
There’s just something that gets the happy going in me when I hear a bullfrog.
And more birdsong–the trilling of a robin, the ‘sqw–aaack’ of a red tailed flicker.
All creation telling me–there is joy ahead.
As I passed this tree–variegated, speckle-petaled glitter of white–the phrase ‘a cloud of witnesses’ came to mind.
This cloud/crowd of nature witnesses (testifies) to the coming season–warm, longer days, more time outdoors, pleasant outside hours are on their way.
And there is joy in our future, encouraged by an invisible group of friends who’ve walked this faith path before us–persevering, enduring, moving in God’s strength.
I just want to keep moving.
I want to remember to keep throwing off those layers and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus.
For the joy…………
