Hey, Thirsty Ones!

How do I love thee?  Let me count the ways….

When Ann Voskamp said in this post
“Is Jesus merely useful to you — or is He ultimately beautiful to you?”
I thought, “Yes!”  that’s why I want to have God’s word written on my heart–
because He is beauty.
He is desirable.
He is worth knowing.
Not to check one more thing off my list.
Not to prove something.
Not to make myself feel all that.

Engraving God’s word on my heart reminds me who my Lover is
and reminds me I will find myself in loving Him.
And how do I do that?  Place myself daily in His word–
get wet in that River every way I can.

I’m joining the community at Do Not Depart starting today–January 20th
and memorizing Chapter 55 of Isaiah–all 13 verses.  We’ll be done around Easter.
(Click here if you’d like to join us in our journey.)

Week Number 1 verse:
“Ho,everyone who thirsts–come to the waters; and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”
I’m excited about our adventure but I need a LOT of help to memorize verses.
I’m a very random abstract processor who thinks globally (big picture, NOT details)
and I’m very easily distracted.
Sooooooooooo, I have a tricks and tools to use:
I made a key chain
with the memory cards that the DoNotDepart team put together.
(Click here :-) if you’d like to download them.)
I’ll keep it handy–maybe throw it in my purse?   Hang on a hook above my desk?

Then I went online to Bible Gateway, found Isaiah 55, copied, pasted it into ‘Skinny Isaiah’ (5 inches or so wide….) and glued it into my Moleskine notebook.
I’ll keep it in my pocket when I’m at work (IF I remember to take it with me).

(Here’s the outside of the notebook–it’s a little  smushed from being in my pocket over the last year or so….)

I also made some journal-sized pages with the verses on it, fancied it up with a border and copied it to keep in my Bible
(I made two copies–I have one in my journal, too.) I’ll use these to make notes on, highlight, underline, draw doodles on…whatever I think will help me remember.
There are no tricks, you just keep trying.

And last but not least, in my random memory arsenal…..
I recorded myself (using my Smartphone) reading Isaiah 55
so I can play it back while I’m riding my exercise bike in the morning.

I’ve spent most of my adult life in education and I know there is more than one way to learn and remember.
In fact, the more ways the better.
I don’t have a ‘system’–I have a Saviour
who knows how I’m wired and what I need to learn.

And He knows YOU–ready to give it a try?  Join us at Do Not Depart
and come drink with us–everlasting water.

  1. I really like your “multiple-approaches” approach… if I'm not being redundant. 😉 Re-reading, writing it out, and saying it out loud — it takes all three for me to memorize anything of significant length.

  2. I memorized Romans 8 last year, but if I don't review consistently, it will drift away. I know that because it's happened before! My review strategies include: 1) reciting it several times a week, during my quiet time, 2) reviewing while completing mindless, household tasks, like vacuuming, 3) saying the verses as I fall asleep at night. I love your imagery, Jody, of being refreshed in the river of God's Word!

  3. Love this…”get wet in that River every way I can.”

Your keychain is adorable! And your 'Skinny Isaiah' is something I need to do too. Hmm…putting that on my to-do list for tomorrow….My email is lisagburgess{at}gmail.com if you wouldn't mind sending me yours.

“I don't have a 'system'–I have a Saviour” Amen to that! Thanks for sharing all this, Jody. Great stuff.

  4. I too have discovered the blessings of memorizing Scripture. I'm currently memorizing Colossians 1:9-13. I have it written on index cards that I drag all over the place with me. I've also printed verses in a large font and double spaced and set it in front of me when I'm cleaning the floors, weeding, ect. Good luck with Isaiah! Linked up behind you at Soli Deo Gloria.
