How to Receive an Unexpected Gift

by | Feb 6, 2015 | Poetry | 14 comments

House finches flit, flit, flit
and hummingbird whirrrrrs,
hovering over birdseed an
arm’s length away.
Red finch jets elsewhere,
bearing left at the bushes
and the chickadee perches,
eyeing the feast.

Crows alight silently on the
trees straight ahead,
swooping at nothing
as they loudly announce
the morning.
The waterfall sound
of freeway cars
and the drifting moan
of a far away train
add to the soundtrack
of the day.

It’s Friday, time and weather
allowing an In Person
visit deckside.
I’m in between–a
commercial interruption
before the next task
ahead, fueling up
my soul’s eyes,
drinking in joy
for the journey.

  9. Aren't birds the best? 🙂 Well, one of the best. Taking the dog out the other morning we heard the birds singing, which must mean winter is drawing to a close. Thanks for your presence here, Jody.

  11. Love your poetry, Jody. Beautiful imagery and clever metaphor! Also love the idea of fueling up in nature, drinking in the joy, before the journey of the next task. Thank you for the reminder that such “commercial interruptions” are a wise investment of time.
