When you process your life with words, rather than say, paint or music or silk, tools are an important consideration.
In my humble opinion, here are my top 3 choices for what to write WITH, what to write ON, and WHERE to keep it all. Includes a tip on how to buy what you need and make a difference write where you are. Yes, I misspelled that intentionally.
Here you go.
- WRITING Utensils:
Black Flair Tip Pens (and other colors!)
Staedtler Norica pencils
Blackwing pencils–swoon. (A gift from my graphic designer son in law).
- STICKY NOTES of all shapes and sizes.
For your brainstorms (or brainsprinkles, as the case may be)
Journal is one of those nouns which has become a verb, as in, “Do you journal?” There’s something weighty about that question, as if the practice held a particular sort of magic by getting one’s thoughts down on paper.
It is hard for me to resist the siren call of paper products—those that provide a perfect place to write. To that end I have more than enough blank journals to fill. My latest notebook/journal project has been to categorize and record Journals that are for bible notes, poetry, thoughts and reflections, sermon notes, essay ideas and so on.
But what if you could combine the outpourings of your heart on paper with doing good in the world? A kind of macro-effect for a micro-purpose?
Well, my friends, you c a n. I’m here to tell you about August Blanks journals.
The August Blanks mission is simple: (from their website)
BUY ONE BOOK and WE GIVE ONE BOOK to the NEEDY on your behalf. You can even track who gets the book. www.augustblanks.
The small company began with a Kickstarter campaign when 283 backers pledged $25,329 to help bring this project to life. (Raised in 30 days!)
Here’s their story:
Can you imagine a day in school without notebooks?
Sadly, this scenario is commonplace in various places in Southeast Asia and Africa. While we continue to make tremendous progress in digital education techniques, there is a world around us that is struggling for access to even the basic needs of school – Notebooks.
We have identified initially few such schools in poverty-ridden areas of India, Africa and Myanmar as part of our initiative to help these children in their schools.
Here is a video showing the work of this small start up and their impact around the world.
As our pilot project, we decided to start AUGUST BLANKS as an organization with the theme BUY ONE, GIVE ONE. We enable people to buy excellent quality notebooks for excellent prices and for each notebook they buy, we would give one notebook on their behalf to the child who needs it.
It is time to step up our efforts, our contributions in any meaningful way so that we can bridge the wide disparity between the digital generation and the absolute poor.
Think more, write more and give more! Buy one, Give one!
