My husband and I love our coffee in the morning. After all, we live in Seattle–it comes with the Starbuck’s territory.
Problem is, no matter how I try, I can’t get the electric kettle filled up the night before to make sure we have enough water for two cups in the morning. (We use little single cup, drip filter thingy–see photo).
I like very hot water and a LOT of coffee grounds.
But most mornings the kettle is low and I have to go to the sink to fill it up before I turn it on.
There’s a fill line on the clear reservoir at the side. ‘Max’ it says, with a line, so I won’t overfill it.
I’m very tempted to do so–you know, to make sure I have enough water. I hate when I make a cup for my husband and then go to pour the water over mine and THERE ISN’T ENOUGH.
Yes, it would be very easy to overfill this little kettle.
But no–I’m sure if I go beyond ‘max’ the pot will overboil, bubble ‘kersplat’ on my counter, send steaming water out in cascades and burn me while I’m reaching for my toast.
‘Maximum’ means ‘the greatest possible quantity, degree or number. As in, way more than enough.
A LOT of water….
There’s a reason that Jesus said that if anyone drinks the water he gives they would never thirst again(John Chapter 4). He tells us this ‘living’ water would become like a spring welling up to eternal life.
When we ‘drink’ of Christ–spend time in His word, in His presence, in worship–we have what we need for the day. Just enough. The right portion.
Portion–‘the part of an estate received by an heir’ (one definition).
Is God enough? Yes!
Without all the extra I want to fill my life with? Yes!
Is He enough for today? Yes, again.
Our Heavenly Father wants us to understand He is our portion–living water, daily bread–so that we would come to Him anew each day and receive just what we need.
Not more than we need, not an overabundance to set aside for the next few days, but just what we need for the day.
Living water………no tea kettle made that can contain that, except US–his creation.
How He loves when we come into His presence, hungry and thirsty for Him–
He wants to fill us up.
To the max.
